FURTHER STAKES SUCCESS FOR PASSIFIED AND ROSINKA

PASSIFIED (2004 f. by Compton Place - Passiflora by Night Shift) broke her maiden first out of Pontefract but, after finishing unplaced in the Tattersalls October Auction Stakes and Gr2 Rockfel Stakes, left England for the US. The change of environment worked wonders and last summer she captured the Flawlessly Stakes at Hollywood Park and the Gr2 San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar. Thereafter the chesnut rather lost her way and was given a break from October until early May, when she was a close second in an 8½ furlong Optional Claiming/Allowance event at Hollywood Park. Dismissed at odds of 12-1 for the Redondo Beach Stakes, run over a mile on turf at the same venue, she stalked the early pace and made her move down the straight for a Ύ length triumph.

One of four Group or Graded winners sired by Compton Place out of mares by Night Shift, Passified was a 28,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling and was resold for 125,000gns as a two-year-old at the Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale. Bred by the Lavington Stud, Passified is out of Passiflora, a half-sister to the Gr2 Cork and Orrery Stakes winner Harmonic Way, and a three-parts-sister to that outstanding mare In the Groove (by Night Shift out of Passiflora's grandam Pine Ridge).

Remarkably, having scored as a breeder on 7th June with Passified, the Lavington Stud also captured a US Stakes on the same day as an owner with ROSINKA (2003 m. by Soviet Star - Last Drama by Last Tycoon). A 58,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling purchase, the mare had only a win in a Goodwood maiden to show for four starts in England but it has been a different story in the US. Last year she hit a rich vein of four straight wins, including the John W Rooney Memorial and R G Dick Breeders' Cup Handicap at Delaware Park, and the Gr3 Glen Falls Handicap at Saratoga, where she gained the verdict over the talented mare Mauralakana. Rosinka completed her 2007 campaign with a game effort in the Gr1 Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont, where she made most of the running before succumbing by Ύ length to subsequent Champion Turf Mare Lahudood, with the previous year's Champion in that category, Wait a While, back in third. Running for the first time since that effort, Rosinka was back for a second try at the John W Rooney Memorial and succeeded in making all over the nine furlong course to get home by Ύ length.

The well-bred mare is a half-sister to King's Drama, a winner of five Group/Graded events in France and the US, including the Gr1 Charles Whittingham Handicap. Her dam, Last Drama, who was black-type placed in France, is out of the Gr3 Greenlands Stakes winner Drama. She is also a sister to the Gr3 Selima Stakes winner Tycoon's Drama (dam of Stakes winners Desert Drama, Tycoon's Dolce and Sharpest Image, and grandam of Group winner Scapolo). A half-sister to Last Drama, Casting Couch, appears as the third dam of the Gr1 Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Nightime.

Kelowna - won Pioneerpoint Maiden Stakes, Goodwood, 8f - £3,238

Piccolo moves to Lanwades as Lavington ceases stallion operation - Racing Post
by Nancy Sexton

Piccolo, the sire of unbeaten two-year-old Winker Watson, will be moved to Lanwades Stud in Newmarket as Lavington Stud, the stallion's home for the last 12 breeding seasons, is closing its stallion division.

The 16-year-old son of Warning will join Domedriver, Hernando, Selkirk and With Approval, plus 2006 Derby winner Sir Percy, at Kirsten Rausing's establishment.

"We're delighted to add the outstanding sprinter Piccolo to our roster of stallions at Lanwades," says Rausing. "His pedigree is entirely free of Northern Dancer, and he's the sole representative of the rare In Reality sire line standing in Newmarket.

"This means we can now provide a wide array of distance aptitudes and pedigree variation, which offer great value and choice to domestic and international mare owners."

Although he is a seasoned veteran, this year has arguably been Piccolo's strongest, courtesy of Winker Watson, who landed his second Group 2, the July Stakes, at Newmarket three weeks after winning Royal Ascot's Norfolk Stakes.

Piccolo has sired the winners of more than 800 races in both hemispheres.

Lavington Stud's Group 1 winner Imperial Dancer is moving to Norman Court Stud in Wiltshire. The nine-year-old son of Primo Dominie, a prolific winner who scored in Group 1 company in Italy, will be represented by his first crop of two-year-olds next year.

The departures of Piccolo and Imperial Dancer from Lavington marks the end of an era for the Sussex stud, which has maintained a stallion operation for nearly 90 years.

It first gained prominence with 1926 champion sire Hurry On, and more recently has been home to Aragon and Josr Algarhoud. The stud will now focus on developing a private broodmare operation.
